IOP City Council Agenda Feb 26, 2019, 6pm

February 23, 2019

As always, thank you for allowing me to serve as your mayor, to put it lightly, we have had a ton of challenges, but with the council we now have, we will overcome these challenges. We are working extremely hard to keep our expenses down especially due to limited income streams, to tackle the repairs needed at our public safety building, to maintain our other city properties, to be better prepared for storm events, to tackle the drainage issues and to remain competitive in retaining personnel. This summer will be the first summer with our new parallel parking plan, we are still finding flaws with implementing this, but like we did last year with our residents guest passes, we fixed that because of you, our residents, letting us know the problems. We hear what you say, and we try to improve. The public safety building contract to inspect the building defects is under way, once this is completed, we will know what we have to do and the estimated costs. Our flooding events are increasing, (See Post and Courier December 22, 2018, “2018 was the year our changing climate became impossible to ignore in South Carolina”). We have engineers evaluating our drainage lines and outflows to determine what we need to do and the costs involved. Finally, SCDOT is sending crews out for a week in March to work on some flooding hot spots. We all need to think resilience in the future. We need to put a moratorium on further lot subdivisions until we tackle our ongoing drainage problems. We need all new construction to use pervious driveways, sidewalks, and swimming pool surrounds. We need residents to keep ditches that abut their property clean. The same thing with abutting sidewalks, please cut back overgrown landscaping. We need to be proactive, not reactive. We are working hard to improve the quality of life for our residents. So, please bear with us, stay involved and think about the upcoming council election this November. Cheers!
